The Battle of Saratoga was fought in 1777on October 17th and was part of the American Revolutionary war. This battle took place in Saratoga on the Hudson River in New York. The generals in this battle were Major general John Burgoyne commander of the British. Major General Horatio Gates and Brigadier Benedict Arnold commanded the American Army. The British army was comprised of some 5,000 British, Brunswickers, Canadians and Indians. The American army by the time of the surrender the American's had around 12,000 to 14,000 militia and troops. To identify the different armies the British wore red coats and headgear of bearskin caps. The Americans dressed in what ever they had around at the time. There were a total 7,000 British and German who marched from Canada only 3,500 were fit for duty at the surrender. The Americans forced the surrender of Burgoyne's force!
